NINETEEN

Early March

I stood in the middle of my bedroom and stared at myself in the full-length mirror. My ribs were not as visible since I had gained a little weight. What does one wear to go fishing?

Josh and I had been spending a lot of time together over the last few months, during which he had been the perfect gentleman. We had managed to be friends who kissed each other good night, but he hadn’t pushed me further than that. He let me take things at my pace and let me know he would be here when I was ready to open my heart. It had been easy hanging out with him. We’d grown to know each other without the pressure of a typical relationship. Who am I kidding? I’m totally falling for him.

Today, he wanted to take me fishing. I hadn’t fished in years. My dad took Randy and me when we were little, but that seemed like a lifetime ago. As kids, we fished in a lake from the water’s edge or in a small rowboat.

Josh wanted to take us into the ocean on his fishing boat. I’d never fished in the ocean, but I would go anywhere with him. I rifled through my drawers and pulled out my sparkly black bikini. The top was tied in the back and around my neck, and triangle pieces adorned with clusters of glitter covered my chest. The bottoms were also black, and the thin straps on my hips were covered in matching sparkly glitter bursts.

The day wasn’t bikini weather, but I thought perhaps in the afternoon, it might warm up enough that I could sunbathe on the boat. I found a black pair of loosely fitted linen pants and pulled those on over my bikini bottoms. I walked over to my closet and searched for a top. Hanging right in front was a black short-sleeve crop T-shirt with a blue smiley face in the center. Perfect. I grabbed my blue cardigan sweater to throw over the top because the morning would be chilly. I ran a brush through my hair and braided it. Looking cute was important to me, but I also wanted to look like I was ready for a day of fishing. Why am I so nervous about this date? We’ve been out before.

I packed a beach towel, sunscreen, lip balm, and a book into my beach bag and walked downstairs to the kitchen. “Good morning,” I said to Renee, who was standing in the kitchen reading the newspaper. “Do you happen to have a sun hat?” Then, turning my gaze to Randy sitting at the kitchen table, I said, “Or maybe you have a fishing hat that doesn’t look ridiculous I could borrow.”

Renee peered over the newspaper. “I have a black sun hat that would look great with your outfit. Let me grab it for you.” When she returned from the laundry room with the hat in her hand, she asked, “Are you going to the beach today? It’s Saturday.
